I think you may be on the right track about the need for people to have challenges in their lives.
On the other hand, some would say that people use drugs to escape from challenges.
There can also be pressure - as you mention. I suppose there is sometimes real pressure as well as perceived peer group pressure and desire to belong.
There is also the question of attitude to authority - prohibitions are likely to be a counter-productive way of communicating with kids (and even old people like me) who have doubts about the virtue of unquestioning obedience to the people who make the rules.
It is a difficult question!Winton Bateshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07383561940886657594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1089082204850170942.post-77084368688005678032010-09-17T05:36:35.359+10:002010-09-17T05:36:35.359+10:00Hi Winton,

I know when I was in high school, (many, many years ago now) the pressure was there even back then, and I saw people give in to that pressure, often wondered what become of them.

You read a lot of excuses why people take drugs, you read how some managed to change their lives only to go back to drugs later. I've often wondered if these people just don't have any goals in their lives, don't plan for the future etc.

I have always had goals, when I manage to achieve a goal, I then have a new one, some have been very hard to achieve, but the challenge is always there.

Is this part of the problem do you think with some of the people that take drugs? Do they need something in their lives to give them a challenge? As I said I will never understand it, I also do not agree with the so called injection rooms, I feel this only encourages drug taking, it is illegal, yet Governments allow injecting rooms, it beggars belief.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
